So I've been on here on a while now.

What I have seen is pretty interesting in what artists call Realism, and especially semi-realism? What a weird use of the term.

What exactly is Realism? Is it drawing cartoon characters with realistic proportions? No that's what people call Semi-Realism.

But Semi-Realism is non-descriptive, semi-realism could mean anything. It covers a broad topics of styles and is generally useless for a categorize.

Realism isn't about bringing things to to life as it more about shaping reality with a hammer, not reflecting it with a mirror. The term Realism comes from the French art movement in the 1850s that was directly opposite of Romanticism, what is Romanticism? The exotic subject matter and exaggerated emotionalism and drama of the Romantic movement.

Doesn't sound to self-telling now doesn't? How Romanticism is generally a term used to refer by to Roman and Classical times, not about love.

If Realism is about portraying what is real, concrete, not mystical, nor ethereal. That is another reason the term to describe the favorite term of Semi-Realism is flat, what does it actually mean to portray reality only half?

So if modern artwork isn't Realism nor it is Semi-Realistic. What do we assign it?

Enter Idealism.

Idealism is portraying subjects in the ideal. This is what artists means when they paint "semi-realistically" especially in fan-art or other subjects. It uses idealistic proportions, compositions, and colors into an ideal state, usually larger than life, extremely powerful, or extremely beautiful. Idealism has gained a lot of attention, but the main problem with Idealism,  that it is forgettable. If you try to portray your brother/sister idealistically, you couldn't because it is impossible, not even photo-realism painting can reach Idealism, the closest thing that can reach Idealism is the Camera, and later the Cinema, you don't have a portrait of your family made, you just have a picture taken. That, and the general composition isn't grounded with reality, so the piece has a contradiction, is it real or not? Is it even the same real person you portrayed? Thus you run into the problem that something is so perfect it seems artificial, in which an Idealistic art-form is. Therefore it is forgotten easily.

Fanart gets away with it because the characters or setting portrayed was never real to begin in the first place. So in essence, the artists is "upping" the graphics of the character, but aren't actually making the character believable or real, because it can never be, nor does it have to be. The branded character already has significant attachment to the fan-base, so there is little reason to ground the character to make it believable. But even still, the artists can't get around the core-fact that the consumer is probably going to see it once, click fave, maybe comment, and never see it again, while an actual Realism painting would have you staring for hours if you appreciated art.

So if you have the problem of your characters, pieces, or stories being forgettable it is probably because your thinking in the ideal.

This is realism

Notice that the artist was trying to shape a reality not mirror it perfectly. The subject matter is real, I can safely say there was a Breton farmer in France that worked all day in the fields. He didn't paint a farmer in the fields as he was so much constructed a farmer in the fields.

Examples of Idealism are pretty easy to find, just hit 1 month popular you'll get some from Sakimichan, Wlop, and others. Notice how everything just seems perfect in a ideal setting with ideal composition. Compare that back to the Song of the Lark and decide which one is more realistic?

If you said Song of the Lark you would be correct. Why, because it is grounded, what is that? That means the subject matter is tied to reality, reality isn't shooting magical beams from your favorite character from a cool setting. For a 19th century Frenchman, working out in the fields all day was a reality, and still is a reality, for not only them but for most of the world as well. That is why it has survived over 150 years.

That is why if you want to improve, abandon the idealistic and study realism proper, that isn't picking up an anatomy book, it is actually studying that time period pieces and comparing it to other periods, anatomy is only a tiny piece. Trust me, Realism is much easier when you don't have to worry about drawing attractive magical girls, buff warriors, plutocratic royalty, or fantastical settings. It is like water on the pallet of the tongue.

Too much of the extraordinary becomes ordinary, while the ordinary becomes extraordinary.

Expect to see such after these tests.

The storm bellowed over the City of Nuria, the waves crashed onto her rocky beaches and port. Vessels determined to reach and leave port, bound for the Infera dared the oceans carrying their greedy exports and imports. The lower city's people squabble around trying to earn a living and not leave the city, or perhaps earn enough to leave. However, many more entered than left. In the Midguard of the City, where most lie, heavily silent the blocks were quiet. To the Upper Echelon of the City was the rulers of the realm, not only the City, but the entire empire. The Head Temple of Eclestia and Ekriba sat on a graceful outcropping, reminding those below who they worshipped. The fabulously wealthy sat on the cliffside, giving a view of the Sea of Caratiea like none other, homes that dwarf the average citizen stood tall, guards always on duty. But their block was an ant compared to the majestic crown of the City. The Ecleaticus Euka Kuna, the massive palace served as the home to the Nurian Gods and Princes, the Embassy, the Senate, and the Umbiraiun Thorne. The architecture emphasized its pillars and arches, like of the Romans and Greeks. The entire structure was a square and spanned 100,000 square feet. From there the Emperor and the Nonoarchy Ruled their realm. Inside the Throne Room, Emperor Xremisis III was greeted by a guest, but no commoner greeted him, or tax man. There bestowed in his grand hall was Nerira, Queen of Hell, Lady of the Devoured, and Empress of Blood. Despite her lordly titles she bowed before the Emperor. Xremisis was surprised but amused by this development. Why would a Lady of Realm so hostile towards the Nurian Empire bow before their rival.

Xremisis: What brings a you here? Queen of the Damned? Lady of Shadow? Empress of Hell, bowing before the Lord of Empire Nuria, Supreme Archdragon, Leader of the Nonoarchy and Descendant of the Most Noble Vahamuat, High King of Nuria and Baria? Speak Demon!

Nerira raised from her position smiling, blood droplets came from her smile. Her green eyes cast upon the Emperor, who was disgusted by the lack of proper care, it seemed that the Imperial Groom did not meet their duty, or did not even attempted. She carelessly wiped the blood off her face, fortunately, or not, the blood wasn't Nurian.

Nerira: Ah, forgive me of my hygiene, great Emperor, I Nerira, Lady of Hell bid you. I have matters...to dicuss, and deals to propose.

Xremisis: Deals? Have you rode all the way from your famished lands to seek my disapproval? You will not seek any deals on me or behalf of Nuria and Her people. But, what matters do you seek?

Nerira: Nurian, my Husband, the Dark One, does not wishes for my power anymore, nor my hous...

Xremisis: So you seek Asylum? Do you know that you are banned from Senate, and you cannot seek refuge here. If you are not Queen, then why should I speak to you, demon?

Nerira: Because, if you pay attention my words, you might just save your crumbling Empire. I and my House, Iuananiasi, wish to fight on your behalf. We wish for the Destruction of the House of Hell and His new Wife, Lilith.

Xremisis was insulted by Nerira's claims, but she was right, Xremisis's Empire of Nuria was crumbling, crippled by his late mother, he struggled to claim the Empire valid admist the growing powers of Hell and Heaven. Though with the alliance with Infera managed to buy sometime.

Xremisis: So you sell yourself as mercenaries, willing to fight for Empire, no, to restore yourself back to Queen, you are weak, despite your titles, but the only one that will help you is I and Nuria. Do you re....

Xremisis cut his words short, Nerira could have been sent for espionage and could fooled him in revealing some information regarding the state of the Empire.

Xremisis: ...If you wish for us to aid your rebellion, you must swear fealty to us once this rebellion is over and you are proclaimed Queen, it is a risk, that I am not too keen on to take, total war with Hell would be advantageous for the Angelic Realm, and the Senate would be disbanded.

Nerira smiled at word Queen, revealing her bloodstained teeth. Xremisis however contemplated how he would remove her from her power, this Queen was obviously trying to claim the Empire and Hell by leading a rebellion on Nuria. It seemed clear, because there was no official announcement from the Demonic Embassy at Albus Magikaus, on the new status change, the new change of Queen was not uncommon, even the Dark One lost control of the Hellish Regions. Most notably the Demons Mammorious, Wyraach Ur, and even his lieutenant Belial had claimed more power. However, it was Him that proved the Master of Realm in the end. Though another Hellish Civil War could allow the Nurians to focus their defenses on the western front more intensely. After all, Heaven proved much more dangerous than Hell. Xremisis stood from his throne standing imposingly.

Xremisis: I will oust you too someone who has more experience with your kind, an Archdragon who could help you with this Rebellion of yours. You will not receive offical Imperial Grace, but he can provide aide.

Nerira: Who is this, person, you speak of?

Xremisis: Calix, Archdragon of Magic, Ruler of Albus Magikaus, Grand Master of Magic, Supreme Archmage, you ride for Albus Magikaus. You are dismissed.

Nerira did not know who this Calix was, she barely knew of the Land of Nuria, but Albus Magikaus sounded familar.

(This is setting up a setting for the next piece I will complete.)
